S.E. Melbourne Phoenix 22/23 Indigenous Jersey

Artist: Shelley Ware

Is a proud Yankunytjatjara and Wirangu woman from Adelaide, South Australia, who currently lives in Melbourne.

For the past decade or so, Shelley has worked in the media as a radio and television presenter on both local and national AFLM and AFLW football news shows. She is a member of the Outersanctum Podcast Show and Broad Radio and write an AFL column fortnightly for the Koori Mail. She is a member of the Carlton FC RAP committee and a VIS board member.

Shelley has become one of the most respected and recognised female presenters of AFLM and AFLW football in the country. Announced the 2019 Essendon Women’s Network ‘Football Woman of the Year.’ Shelley is a well sought after MC and key note speaker.

Shelley has co-written the national curriculum through Culture is Life and ABC Education for the Australian Dream and Archie Roach - Stolen Generation . For the second year in a row, she has written the national primary curriculum for NAIDOC week with SBS Learn and this year writing both primary and Secondary.

Shelley is a teacher who currently works writing national curriculum for teachers at Culture is Life. She is passionate about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history being embedded into our national curriculum.

Jersey Design:

The South East Melbourne Phoenix Basketball club have a strong connection to community. It is evident there is a lot of pride in making that connection stronger and stronger and I wanted to represent this on the front of the singlet.

You can see a large circle front and centre this represents the team of 11 players on the list. The pattern of the circle is a combination of the two medium size circles to its left and right. The right circle represents the community and fans who support the players. The left handed circle represents the support staff and coaches who manage the team.

The Phoenix players wouldn’t be who they are today without them, that’s why I combined the two circles to show they are a huge part of the team too. Then you can see the little circles are a repeat of both these two circles, representing the depth of community involvement and support in this team of 11 players.

The back of the jumpers is about the Country the team trains, works and plays on. It’s a sign of respect to the ancestors who cared for the Country for over 65,000+ years and how it is our responsibility to continue to care for Country and pay out respects to the wildlife and people who walked it before us.
