Illawarra Hawks 22/23 Youth Indigenous Jersey

Artist: Aunty Trish Levett Holder of Knowledge

A proud Gundungurra woman from the mountains in the Southern Highlands of NSW (Mittagong). A lover of the muddy rivers. Born and raised on her traditional land and moved to the South Coast over 16 years and now live on Dharawal country.

Her traditional name is Kalawatawarra which means dragonfly. Aunty Trish has been an artist for over 30 years, keeping our dreaming stories alive and passing them down to the younger generation. She teaches art, dance, language and caring for country especially our sacred sites.

She has exhibited throughout NSW in many galleries including Parliament house in Sydney, where she received a highly commended award, and has sold many works internationally.

Aunty Trish was invited by Internationally renowned curator Djon Mundine to exhibit in the Dingo Project along with 26 other very well- known artists which has been a huge honour to be recognised as an Original (Aboriginal) artist at this high level. As an artist she uses all different mediums, she loves to paint with our traditional ochres that mother earth provides for us.

Jersey Design:

The painting represents the Illawarra Hawks with the hawk in the middle representing all the Hawks players. The bottom of the painting represents mother earth the sacred land. The blue design is the ocean and the rivers that run into the ocean.

The brown lines above the water represent the mountains. The feet are players walking to the court which is shown as a half circle around the hawk. The double U shapes in the corners show the Holders of Knowledge (Elders) who watch over the Hawks players. The three circle shapes near the hawk show meeting places. The colours used as dots show the different coloured traditional ochres that our people use in ceremonies and for paintings.
