The South East Melbourne Phoenix’s Indigenous Jersey design has a number cultural touchpoints that relate both to indigenous culture but also the culture of the club.

The small centre circle represents elders sitting together talking business and making important decisions.

The second circle symbolises the cohesion of family, from extended family, all the way to friends and the wider community looking after each other, working together and keeping each other safe.

The last circle represents the ancestral elders, the chief mentors who protect family, extended family, and community.

They keep everyone safe by looking after their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being with an underlying focus of keeping all in balance.

The rest of the design symbolises meeting places - wherever we travel there are always meeting places in communities, where we are able to visit, feel safe and are welcomed.

The colours in the design hark back to the club colours, while the themes of family and community are at the core of what the Phoenix represent.

“This is how l interpret the basketball club or any sporting organisation that strive to make sure all are welcomed, cared for and their needs are met and all are treated as family,” Heather Kennedy
